Review: Guess the Character – Built with Bricks

On this page, you’ll regularly find reviews, event updates, and everything related to those little interlocking bricks. Today, we’re taking a closer look at a very special book.

Now, before you think, “Oh no, I’d rather be building than reading a book,” hold on for a moment. This isn’t just a typical book—it’s more of a game and a true challenge for fans of colorful bricks!

The title of this work is Guess the Character – Built with Bricks by Patsonbricks. Does that name ring a bell? That’s right, the influencer who captivates us with creative videos and reels—from original LEGO cocktails to stunning MOCs, like an entire Fabuland set. You might also know him from Brixembourg, where he appeared as a guest, complete with a YouTube video documenting the event.

But how did Patrik, also known as Patsonbricks, develop his passion for the small interlocking bricks? And how did the idea for this book come about?

How did your passion for LEGO begin?

I think, like everyone, I started playing with LEGO as a child. You can see in old photos how I unwrapped sets at Christmas—sets that still sit in my room today and are now played with by my son. Over time, the hobby faded a bit, but since 2014, I’ve been more involved again. Back then, my girlfriend gave me the UCS R2-D2 as a gift, and that reignited my passion. After we broke up, and I struggled to process it, I turned to the hobby to help combat depression and other challenges. The positive feedback I received for many of my projects really helped me get back on my feet.

The Book: A Game with LEGO Figures

In Guess the Character, the goal is to identify iconic and classic characters that have been abstractly recreated using LEGO bricks. A bit of light blue, a touch of yellow, a hint of black—voilà, a Minion! Sounds easy, right? But first impressions can be deceiving. Often, the solution is right on the tip of your tongue—but it just won’t come to you.

The characters come from all areas of pop culture: animated series, video games, movies, and even music bands. But how does one come up with the idea of representing characters like the Simpsons or Ariel with just five or six bricks? That’s exactly what we asked Patrik!

The idea wasn’t directly mine. I think we’ve all seen similar images at exhibitions or online. Even LEGO once had posters featuring some of these characters. About four years ago (March 2020), I tried to get people excited about it on Facebook, but it didn’t gain much traction due to a lack of interest. Unlike Threads, Facebook showed immediately who had already guessed correctly, which discouraged others from participating. Threads worked differently, and as a result, more people joined in the guessing. It was such a great feeling to see so many people enjoying it at once. It’s essentially abstract art—not everyone can see what’s behind the bricks. That’s also the challenge when creating them. But it’s incredibly rewarding when people guess correctly or when they have to work through the puzzle to recognize the character.

An Interactive Experience

The book begins with an introduction explaining how the figures are conceptualized. This not only helps you solve the puzzles but also inspires you to create your own designs. And beware: once you start flipping through the pages, it quickly becomes addictive. With over 100 different models, the book challenges your imagination while encouraging you to come up with your own characters.

A highlight: the book is perfect for a game night with friends or as a creative activity at events such as LEGO meetups or family gatherings. It’s guaranteed to spark conversations and provide exciting challenges in every round!

Patsonbricks: More Than Just an Author

In addition to his work as an influencer and author, Patrik is also known as an exhibitor and beverage creator. His creative LEGO-themed cocktails have been a highlight at events like Brixembourg. But what brings him the most joy?

What brings me the most joy is interacting with people, no matter the topic. Whether it’s showcasing the Fabuland MOC, seeing people buy my book, or noticing my drinks incorporated into builds somewhere—it’s all about the connections. I often help people at the "Steinequelle" or get asked for advice, and I simply love the sense of community. At home, I spend a lot of time alone, so I always enjoy being surrounded by people at events and having fun. For me, the goal is simply to provide value to the community—whether through projects or by being a positive presence that spreads good vibes.
As for the future, we’ll see. I have a larger MOC planned—a Fabuland pyramid—but I’m sure there will be a few smaller MOCs, some new drinks, or live streams along the way. I’m pretty spontaneous and let the bricks guide me—definitely to a few events, that’s for sure.
